Creative Games to play with your dogs
May 16, 2008

So! What kind of games do you play with your pet dog? Is it the usual kind of games like catching the ball and such other stuff or have you tried out playing some new games?

Well, whether you like playing games with your dog or not, it is time that you did play some physically active games with your pets.

Six good reasons why you need to play games with your dogs:

1.
Terrific circulation toner
Games help to tone up your dogs circulation. When your dog has to run and jump and exert himself or herself, the blood circulation to the different tissues is greatly improved. Enhanced circulation always means that you are soon going to have a sleeker, trimmer, healthier dog.

2.
Effective weight reducer
If your dog is overweight and likes to binge on food, then one way you can help your dog get over those flab spots is by giving your dog ample exercise and help redirect them to there food obsession. Games help to do that.

3.
Monotony Reducer
Simply making your dog go for a walk is a rather monotonous way to stay fit. Playing a game stimulates your dog's brain to think and apply his or her mind to solve a problem.

4.
Enhanced Creative Driver
Therefore, besides being good food for the body, games also help to enhance your dog's intelligence and creative aspirations and expressions.

5.
Great mood elevator and stress buster
A dog used to a regular session of games twice or thrice a week or everyday is less likely to have behavior problems. Games are a great mood elevator. If you play a game everyday with your dog, that means your dog is going to be feeling really high, positive, perky and will enhance your bond and trust. Just try it out and you'll see what we mean.

6.
Terrific skill developer
If you want your dog to develop some kind of skill which may be either developing a nose for detection, or getting an eye for texture, you can do that by playing some very imaginative games.

Five creative game ideas for you to explore with your dogs

1.Design your own dog friendly table tennis game
The first step that you need to follow to design this game is check out your dogs height. Then you need to design a small table that's not too big nor too high for your dog to place his or her paws comfortably on.

The next step is to then teach your dog the rudiments of the game. The exception here is that you would not need a net as in a conventional table tennis table. In fact, your dog may be more comfortable without it.

Now, you need to gradually teach your dog to tap the ball as you tap it off your table tennis bat. You will be surprised how quickly your dog will learn and how deftly the returns will be made. Cats and small dogs may be especially fond of this game.

2.Carrom - Dog Special Way
In this game, what you will need is a small board which it would be preferable if it is shaped hexagonally. The boards need to have diagonal grooves and little nets at the six apices.

The game can be played with a maximum of six players, probably two dogs and four humans. Each person plays the game by throwing the ball randomly in the hexagonal board. The person who has the maximum number pieces that fall in the same pocket wins the game. If your dog wins the game, you must always remember to praise your dog and reward him or her with a food treat.

3.Hide and Seek
This game may be played in a similar manner that children play the game, except that you need to show your dog how to hide. Hide and Seek can be made in to a very interesting and invigorating game for both the dogs and children in your home. You can involve the elders of the house too in this game. A good place to play the game is in the garden where there are lots of bushes. A lot of surprise packages thrown in different hiding places can add an element of delight to the game.

4.Basket Ball
Basket ball once again needs to be designed keeping in mind your dogs height and build. If your dog is a really small dog, then you can build a very tiny court and get a very small basket net and ball for your dog to catch and throw the ball in to. However, it is preferable to restrict this game to the really large breeds of dogs because it can become rather strenuous.

This game should not be played more than once a week as it can be quite exhausting. The ball too should be specially designed to be very, very light. What is light for a human child may be still very heavy for a dog. Therefore, great care should be taken while playing this game.

5.
Blind man's buff
For your dog to play this game, you need to use a small scarf or some soft cloth to cover your dogs eyes. The game is played when the scarf covers your dogs eyes completely and everyone who is playing the game goes and hides. Then, your dog needs to identify where you are hiding.

Everyone can take turns in putting on the scarf and hiding. It may be preferable to use a separate set of scarves for your pets and for the children who are playing the game.

Games represent a useful form of communication, entertainment and physically stimulating activity for pets and should be regularly played to help them stay physically and mentally healthy and alert.
