Treating Your
Allergic Pet at Home
The chronic itching can be a
problem!
March 24, 2008
It's uncomfortable for your pet
and drives some people CRAZY!
Many people have tried so many things... treating for fleas, bathing,
supplements, special food... but nothing seems to help.
The first you need to do is go back to the Basics. It's not about the
one Magic Bullet, but about ruling out the causes.
Food:
Allergies to food can exhibit the same pattern of itchy skin and hair
loss on the front of your dogs body. The difference is that these
allergies are not seasonal. You likely can manage your dogs allergies
with a special diet recommended by a veterinarian. Many pet foods are
byproducts of human food, pet food allergens are typically substances
like chicken, beef, wheat and corn. If a veterinarian diagnoses a food
allergy in your dog and suggests feeding him a unique diet with specific
nutrient sources - like rabbit, venison and rice - its important to
adhere to the new diet and not allow exceptions.
Then look at adding in supplements
that will decrease the urge to itch.
-
Essential Fatty Acids
-
Anti-oxidant Vitamins
-
Weekly Oatmeal Shampoos
Fleas:
When a flea bites, it injects a small amount of saliva into your dogs
body. Many dogs react to this saliva with itchy, irritable skin,
typically on the rear part of the body, above the base of the tail. To
avoid flea allergy dermatitis, it is best to administer flea control
year-round,
Pollens:
Inhaled allergens from pollens are typically seasonal and can come from
grass, trees or blooming bushes. Two signs of pollen allergies are
itchy skin and hair loss, usually toward the front of your dogs body on
the neck, head, ears or underside of the front paws. If your dog
experiences pollen allergies, speak to your dogs veterinarian.
If you haven't managed your dogs
allergies, then get your veterinarian to give the safe topical
medication to rule it out now.
Do a proper food trial... Nothing else for 12 weeks!!
Add in a daily fatty acid supplement now!
