Russian Terrier Dog
The Black Russian Terrier is an eager, fun-loving, and
intelligent dog. The Black Russian Terrier dog loves to
be around humans and be part of the action. Very
observant and brave, the Black Russian Terrier likes to
please his owners and is a very willing dog. Like most
other terriers, the Black Russian Terrier dog does have
something of a stubborn streak. Whilst the Black Russian
Terrier dogs intelligence and eagerness can make work,
play, and training fun, his stubborn streak can slow
things down a little. The Black Russian Terrier dog has
a curious nature and likes to explore, so he should not
be left loose outside of a secured area. The Black
Russian Terrier dogs can be dominant at times, but they
are known to be easy to house break.
The Black Russian Terrier dog will usually get on well
with children, and can be fascinated by them. However,
do remember that these dogs are large, and he may
inadvertently knock down a smaller child in play. The
Black Russian Terrier dogs can be dominant around other
dogs that are not part of the household, but are
generally okay with other pets in the household. The
protective nature of the Black Russian Terrier makes him
an effective watchdog. This means that he will often be
wary around strangers. The Black Russian Terrier dogs
can learn quickly but can sometimes be a little slow
when it comes to being mature. The Black Russian Terrier
dogs are well suited to confident dog owners that have
plenty of time and attention to devote to their pet.
The Black Russian Terrier stands out due to its unique
facial characteristics (the breed has a “beard” on its
head and a “mustache” on its muzzle) and its massive
size; to say that it is large is probably an
understatement. The Black Russian Terrier has a
powerful, muscled body, with solid, strong legs. It has
a large head with strong jaws and almond-shaped dark
eyes. The body length should be proportionate to its
length at withers. The coat Black Russian Terrier
is thick, bristly, and waterproof, reaching up to two
inches and is typically the color black.
Developed by the government
kennels as a military working dogs, Russia decided to
import breeds from their occupied countries in the 1930
- 1940s. Mainly using German breeds, Black Russian
Terriers ancestors include the Giant Schnauzer who was
crossed with the Airedale, Rottweiler and a local dog
called the Moscow Retriever. The Black Russian Terrier
dog serves as the icon for their state owned Red Star
Kennel. The breed guarded the border with human soldiers
and also detected mines and other explosives. Known as
the dog that does everything, the Chornyi Terrier also
worked by transporting supplies, pulling sleighs, and
finding wounded soldiers. Black Russian Terriers were
meant for the most extreme weather, and continued to
serve in all these areas even during the coldest
winters, as well as independently. Serving in the
Russian military, they also served in Afghanistan and
Bosnia. In 1968 a breed standard was registered, and in
2004 the breed finally attained recognition by the AKC.
Although rare, they have been embraced by the public and
can be found in small numbers in European and
Scandinavian dog shows. These Blackies remain largely in
Russia to this day as family pets and protectors.
