Beauceron Dog
The Beauceron is a brave, faithful
and highly intelligent dog. Fearless, vigilant, and
patient, the Beauceron dog has an aptitude for obedience
training and is known for his quick and thorough
understanding of his master's desires. The Beauceron dog
are an excellent natural guard dog whose appearance and
demeanor command respect. The Beauceron dog is happiest
when it is working or exercising in wide-open spaces.
The Beauceron dog are instinctive herders who will herd
everything in sight unless trained to do otherwise.
Calm, obedient and very loyal, the Beauceron is always
eager to please its master. The Beauceron dog like to
know who is boss and then they follow. The Beauceron dog
are generally good with children if they are raised with
them from puppy hood. The Beauceron dogs are large
energetic breed and can be overwhelming to a small
child. Even as a puppy at 3 months old it can weight 40
pounds. The Beauceron dog can be very protective.
Thorough training with a firm master is absolutely
necessary. The Beauceron dog will obey commands from all
members of the family if trained to do so. The Beauceron
dog breed is sociable with other dogs they know, but
they are highly territorial and will not tolerate an
intruder. The Beauceron dog should not be left alone for
long periods of time. Puppies are very active and slow
to mature. The Beauceron dog should be properly and
thoroughly socialized. A Beauceron dog that has been well
socialized and brought up gets along fine under normal
circumstances with children, and that also ensures that
other dogs and pets will present no problems. They
generally get along well with cats if they are
introduced to them at an early age.
Beauceron dog is the largest
dog breed of France. Called the French
Shorthaired Shepherd dog, Beauce Shepherd dog, Berger de Beauce
dog,
and Bas Rouge. Highly versatile, it can adapt to any
tasks given them, making it an ideal working
dog. It has a coarse and dense outer coat and an
undercoat that is also dense. The Beauceron dogs coat is a bicolor
black and tan. Eyes: horizontal, set well apart, large,
slightly oval, dark brown. Its straight ears are set
high and its nose, black and slightly convex towards the
end. The dewclaw on its hind legs gives it a distinctive
characteristic. The
Beaucerons dog breeds originated in the fields
surrounding Paris, called La Beauce. Bred in the 1500's
to track bears, wild boars and stag, the Beauceron was
later used as a shepherd dog in guarding flocks.
Beaucerons are relatives to their ancestral breed, the
Briards, or Berger de Brie. In the late sixteenth
century, Beaucerons and Briards were not distinguished
from each other. In 1863 Beaucerons were grouped in
Paris with the Briard as one breed with two different
coat types. Later the breed separated and formed the
Beauceron Club in 1911. Only in the nineteenth century
were the breeds recognized as different dogs and were
then called by their current names. During the Great
Wars, Beaucerons were commonly used to carry messages in
the military. There are also paintings depicting these
military dogs doing their jobs. Nowadays, Beaucerons are
used in K-9 units to fight crime as well dogs for the
blind.
