Spanish Water Dog

Spanish Water Skills
A very old variety of the Barbet or water family, the Spanish Water has three different types. The Spanish Water have been used to herd sheep despite being a water-retrieving dog. For many years, the Spanish has used them as a herder and all-around working dog. However, this breed is still almost unknown outside its hometown. Although always recognized as a multipurpose breed, they have received little attention from professional breeders. The Spanish Water can be found mainly on the north coast of Spain, and are now primarily used for goat herding, and also for retrieving ducks. Some owners of this breed claim that they are the most versatile and multifaceted breed that can adapt to any household and have been used as guardian and companion, in addition to water sports, retriever, and search and rescue. In fact, teams of Spanish Water Dogs were sent to Turkey and Mexico as rescue after an earthquake.

Spanish Water Personality
A lot of pet owners think that the Spanish Water is perfect. The Spanish Water are obedient, hard working, faithful, well balanced, and totally devoted to his family. Provided that they are properly introduced or raised together from a very young age, they would get along well with other dogs, and cats. The Spanish Water also do well with children. As with all other breeds, socialization is key. They are always eager to please and willing to work. As natural guardians,

they can be aloof to strangers. They do not bark a lot but when they do, take this at once as a warning. They should not be fed table crap, just like all other breeds. The Spanish Water needs a firm but gentle hand.

Spanish Water Exercise Needs
The Spanish Water are very energetic and need lots of exercise. If not properly exercised, they become restless. A long daily walk or jog as well as outdoor play is recommended.

Spanish Water Living Conditions
The Spanish Water is very flexible. It can adapt to almost all environments or circumstances and will do well in all climates. The Spanish Water can survive both extreme cold and heat with no problem. Keeping one in an apartment is okay as long as it is given enough exercise.

Spanish Water Grooming Requirements
Never blow-dry the dog. Just let this air dry. Do not use shampoo, softeners, conditioners or other chemicals on the coat. Wash only with brown bars of the old-fashioned laundry soap and bathe only when dirty with cold water.

Spanish Water Health Issues
Choose your breeders carefully as there have been reported cases of hip dysplasia. Other than that, they are quite a healthy breed.
