It could possibly one of the oldest breeds of dogs from the Iberian Peninsula. The Estrela Mountain is a large, powerful, athletic and strongly muscled with a short back and a thick tail. In 1974 it was brought to Great Britain, and in 1998, to the United States. The Estrela Mountain was officially recognized as a breed by the UKC in the year 1996. The Estrela Mountain is also known as the Portuguese Mountain dog.
