This breeds former hunting instinct has been eliminated, hence his work is not distracted by the scent of wilds animals or other dogs. The Lagotto Romagnolo is loyal, keen, affectionate, very attached to his owner and easy to train. It gets on well with other dogs and the other pets if sufficiently socialized. A Lagotto Romagnolo is supposed to get along with any dog. In Italy they are kept in packs, so they need to get along. This is an excellent family companion and a very good warning dog. The Lagotto Romagnolo is a good pet and loves people.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a small to medium sized characterized by its well proportioned body that is covered by a thick, dense, profusely curly coat. The coat originally protected the cuddly canine from thorny shrubs and bushes when it worked as a hunter of truffles. The Lagotto Romagnolo early occupation earned him the moniker “Truffle Dog”. Their ears are triangular in shape with oddly rounded tips and they have big and round eyes that make them more appealing as they resemble teddy bears.

The Lagotto Romagnolo dog, in ancient Italy, was bred originally for water retrieving duties. Later on, when the marshlands were drained, the Lagotto took on a new responsibility: that of searching for truffles. Nowadays, the Lagotto no longer need to use their sense of smell to look for truffles. The Lagotto Romagnolo now have other duties to perform. Some Lagotto dogs compete in water sports, some are utilized as scent hounds, and even more are bred to be companion or guard dogs.

The highly active Lagotto Romagnolo require a lot of exercise. Take this out with you when you go jogging or when you go out for walks and the Lagotto would be pleased to keep up with you.

The Lagotto Romagnolo Living Conditions
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a breed that can do well in an apartment with limited space provided that it is given adequate exercise. This active need to be kept active, a walk 3 to 4 times per day would be enough to keep the Lagotto happy. If you have plants or prized flowers, it is best to keep these fenced in because if these plants catch the attention of your pet, you can be sure that these will be uprooted --- the Lagotto just love to dig.

The Lagotto Romagnolo Grooming Requirements
The water-proof coat of the Lagotto Romagnolo appears rough and forms thick, tight curls that cover the entire body (except for the head). The traditional colors are off-white, brown, and orange. Some Lagotto dogs have a white coat with brown or orange colored markings. Still, some dogs have a dark brown mask. Because of the thick, tight curls on the Lagotto, brushing will need to involve short, firm strokes. Further more, baths will need to be more common because of the tendency of curls to capture dirt and brush.

The Lagotto Romagnolo seems to be a hardy breed; so far, no serious genetic defects have been reported yet.
