The Greater Swiss Mountain is a sociable and loves being part of the family activities. These dogs are fiercely protective and loyal of their family, and make great watchdogs. The Greater Swiss Mountain is well suited to family life, but does need plenty of room to exercise as well as daily power walks. The Greater Swiss Mountain can be stubborn and determined, and is best suited to those with some experience of ownership. With a Greater Swiss Mountain you will have a loyal, calm and dignified family pet that is devoted to his loved ones, and is eager to please. The Greater Swiss Mountain gets along well with children, and is both devoted to them and protective of them. However, the giant size of the breed may make life difficult of you have very small children in the household and this breed you need to train them to ensure that he keeps from viewing them as part of there pack do to there protective drive. If you have pets then early socialization is important - some Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs will get along well with other pets, but others may chase smaller animals, and some can be aggressive with strange dogs. With strangers the reaction can vary too depending on the personality of the individual dog, and whereas some may be friendly others may be reserved or even aggressive.

The Great Swiss Mountain Dog
The Great Swiss Mountain is the biggest of the four Swiss Sennenhunde breeds. Although relatively a new breed, it is also the oldest among the four. Also known as the Grosser Schweitzer Sennenhunde or simply Swiss dog, it has a large, muscular stature that is agile enough to perform farm duties of the mountainous regions of its place of origin. The skull is flat and broad with medium sized ears, almond shaped eyes with an expression that is animated and gentle. The topcoat is dense with an undercoat that may be thick and sometimes showing. This breed almost became extinct when much work they performed was supplied by other breeds or by machines. It is still fairly rare at present.


Greater Swiss Mountain Skills
The Great Swiss Mountain was originally used by farmers and herdsmen

to assist them with their daily chores such as pulling carts and guarding livestock. It was a herding dog, a guard and a utilitarian draft dog. Today, it has become a popular family and is quite responsive in the obedience ring. The Great Swiss Mountain talents include tracking, watch dogging, guarding, carting and competitive obedience.

Greater Swiss Mountain Personality
The Great Swiss Mountain is quite territorial probably due to the original work given to it. It should be introduced to newcomers but will quickly warm up to those accepted by the family. The Greater Swiss Mountain is protective but not aggressive even to other pets. It has been proven to be an excellent companion for children and prefers to be treated as part of the family. As a watchdog, it is alert and vigilant. The Great Swiss Mountain is also a faithful and willing worker.

The Great Swiss Mountain Exercise Needs
Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs need regular moderate exercise. It can take the form of daily evening walks or regular play in the backyard. The Great Swiss Mountain should get enough exercise without overdoing it especially during hot weather to avoid the dangers of heat stroke. Occasional vigorous activities such as hiking or cart pulling will help to keep the fit.

The Great Swiss Mountain Living Conditions
Apartment life can be suitable for a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. A small yard is even better. The Great Swiss Mountain show preference for cool climates.

The Greater Swiss Mountain regularly sheds twice a year and sheds fairly light in between. Regular brushing once or twice a week is sufficient to minimize shedding and keep the skin and coat healthy.

The Great Swiss Mountain Health Issues
Generally, the Greater Swiss Mountain is a healthy breed but health concerns may include gastric torsion, hip and elbow dysplasia and eye anomalies. Cancer is not common but is among the most frequent causes of death.
