Finnish Lapphund Dog

The Finnish Lapphund is an intelligent herding breed. Finnish Lapphund dogs take well to training due to their intelligence. Some owners and fanciers claim that "Lappies" even have the ability to think through actions first. Although small in number worldwide, a noticeable number of Finnish Lapphund have excelled in activities such as obedience trials, agility, herding trials, and pet therapy. Finnish Lapphund is friendly and alert, and makes a good watch dog, due to its tendency to bark at unfamiliar things. The breed was originally used to herd reindeer by droving, and barking helped it to be distinguished from wolves. Even when not herding, the Finnish Lapphund tends to bark with a purpose, and more rare cases of problem barking can normally be controlled by training

The Finnish Lapphund Dog
The Finnish Lapphund is one of the spitz-like dogs from the arctic region. Often called as The from the Land of Midnight Sun, this husky breed is characterized by its square typed body and long hair. The Finnish Lapphund is said to have had its beginnings as early as 7000 BC. The breed was once called the Lapponian Shepherd and was officially called the “Finnish Lapphund” only in 1993. It is one of the most popular breeds in Finland as is sometimes known as the “Suomenlapinkoira” or simply “Lapinkoira.”

Finnish Lapphund Skills
The Finnish Lapphund was originally bred to guard or herd reindeer, and double as a hunting dog. Because the breed is naturally cooperative, they also make good human companions and watch dogs. Today, the Finnish Lapphund not only herds livestock (sheep and cattle), they are now also being bred to be sporting dogs and family pets.

Finnish Lapphund Personality
The Finnish Lapphund is probably one of the most intelligent canine breeds around. Not only are the Lapphund quick learners and easy to train, they also think before they act. Finnish Lapphund dogs are very cooperative despite being naturally independent. They are protective of

its owners and, being a herding animal, tend to look at his owners as a flock that needs to be tended. Female Lapphund dogs are more submissive than the male variety.

The Finnish Lapphund Dog Exercise Needs
Though the Finnish Lapphund  can adapt to living in an environment with limited space, they still need to be exercised regularly. Finnish Lapphund s should have at least 60 to 80 minutes of activity, preferably running, per day

The Finnish Lapphund Dog Living Conditions
The Finnish Lapphund does not have very special living needs. Despite having been bred to help herd reindeer, the Lapphund can be kept inside apartments or homes with limited space. The Lapphund is known to be able to adapt itself to different environments and circumstances.

The Finnish Lapphund Dog Grooming Requirements
The long and coarse double coat of Finnish Lapphund dogs comes in a variety of colors from golden brown (or fawn) to gray-black or black always with other color markings. One main color, usually black, should dominate and the markings should only be seen on the head, neck, chest, legs and tail. Male Finnish Lapphund dogs are known to have an abundant “lion-like” mane. Typical grooming for double coat breeds should be practiced.

The Finnish Lapphund Health Issues
The Finnish Lapphund is one of the healthiest canine breeds. There have been very few reports of Lapphund afflicted with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or Canine Hip Dysplasia. To protect the breed from “deteriorating”, the Lapphund dogs are part of PEVISA, a Finnish kennel program that aims to reduce incidences of inherited diseases. Offspring are not registered unless the breeding stock has been examined and certified free from abnormalities
