Central Asian Shepherd Dog

The Central Asian Shepherd is a calm, fearless flock guardian. Independent, they stand their ground and not back down. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs are good with all members of their own family, however, they should be supervised with children. Outside the home the Central Asian Shepherd dogs may try to dominate other dogs and are wary of strangers; they are guardians and will act as such. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs like to bark at night and this may present a problem if you have close neighbors. Socialization is a must for the Central Asians, unless they are being used as flock guards. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs get along with cats and other non-canine animals and other dogs, as long as the is not a threat to their charge. The CAS lived its life with the Family of Turkmen thus they are family dogs that want and seek interaction with daily life. This flock guardian is not for everyone. The Central Asian Shepherd s need an owner who understands the flock guard type and the temperament that comes along with it. This is not a breed for the timid owner.

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog
The Central Asian Shepherd is part of the troika that is made up of the Caucasian Ovcharka and the South Russian Sheep dog. It is a strong, powerful and this is seen by appearance alone. The body is longer than its height, and its thick coat can either be long or short. The Central Asian Shepherd has a large chest and a wide, strong back. In some countries, owners and breeders dock both the tail and the ears to help it fight better against aggressors. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs are very good guard dogs, a skill for which they were originally bred.

Central Asian Shepherd Skills
Although its true origins are cloudy and hazy, it is generally thought that the Central Asian Shepherd is around 4,000 years old, descended from the Tibetan Mastiff. The Central Asian Shepherd hailed from the areas of Russia, Siberia, and Afghanistan and were originally

used to guard flock and livestock, a skill that they still hold until today. They were also used to protect owners and families. Today, they are not as widespread in Russia although they are beginning to grow in popularity in the United States.

Central Asian Shepherd Personality
The Central Asian Shepherd is nowhere near as fierce and aggressive as the Caucasian Ovcharka. It is known for its calm and fearless demeanor toward its family. As guard dogs, they are naturally suspicious of strangers and have also been known to dominate other dogs of different breeds when they are taken outside the house. Inside, however, the Central Asian Shepherd gets on well with other animals such as cats and other dogs. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs must be taught to socialize from a young age, however, in order for it to feel comfortable around others.

Central Asian Shepherd dogs Exercise Needs
Although they are large in size and look as if they lumber across the room, in truth they are very alert and agile. The Central Asian Shepherd are great to take along on walks, jogs, and runs. They need to be exercised daily.

Central Asian Shepherd dogs Living Conditions
The Central Asian Shepherd are more comfortable outdoors although they can adapt to indoor living. A small apartment is not recommended given their temperament and size. If there is a large yard that is fenced, that means more work for them with regard to guarding.

Central Asian Shepherd Grooming Requirements
The Central Asian Shepherd does not need to be professionally groomed; sticks and weeds do not get caught in its coat and dirt and mud will was right off. The Central Asian Shepherd dogs shed heavily during the springtime and continue on with light shedding throughout the year. Make sure that it gets brushed so as to remove stray, dead hairs.
